One of the smallest sunfish species in Michigan, the Orangespotted Sunfish is a colorful panfish found in warm, turbid rivers and lakes in the southern Lower Peninsula. Males display vivid orange spots on their sides.
Warm, turbid, slow-moving rivers, lakes, and backwater areas. Tolerant of silty, low-quality water where other sunfish struggle. Found primarily in southern Michigan river systems. DNR records show Orangespotted Sunfish present in 23 Michigan water bodies. Bite activity rates Good or better in May, Jun, Jul, Aug and Sep.
