Types of Boat Ramps in Michigan

Not all launches are created equal. Knowing the ramp type before you go saves a wasted trip.

🛞

Paved ramp

Concrete or asphalt. Handles most trailered boats in any weather. The most common type at DNR and county sites — usually includes trailer parking.

🪨

Gravel ramp

Compacted stone base. Works well in dry conditions but can soften after heavy rain. Fine for aluminum fishing boats. Traction can vary seasonally.

🌿

Dirt / natural

Unimproved slope. Typically only passable in dry conditions with a 4WD vehicle. Common at remote state forest sites — check conditions before you go.

🚶

Carry-in only

No ramp — kayaks, canoes, and car-top boats only. Usually a short walk to the water. No trailer access. Often the quietest spots on the lake.

Before You Launch

A few things worth checking before you trailer up and head out.

📉

Check water levels

Low water years can leave concrete ramps ending in mud. Call the managing park or check local reports before trailering a big boat.

💳

Verify the fee

Some county sites have moved to automated pay stations. Bring a card. DNR sites covered by a Recreation Passport sticker — check before you go.

🅿️

Trailer parking

Busy summer weekends fill trailer lots by 7am on popular lakes. Check listed parking capacity and plan to arrive early or have a backup site.

🌿

Aquatic invasive species

Michigan law requires removing all plants and draining all water before leaving any launch. AIS signage is posted at most DNR ramps.

🕐

Hours of operation

Many DNR sites post seasonal hours — some close before sunset and restrict night launches. Check the hours listed on each launch page.

📋

Registration required

Any motorized watercraft must be registered in Michigan before launching. Kayaks and canoes are exempt but still follow the same AIS rules.

What is a Public Boat Launch?

A boat launch — also called a boat ramp or boating access site — is a paved, gravel, or natural slope that lets you slide a trailered or carry-in boat into the water. Michigan's DNR maintains over 1,100 public boating access sites statewide, ranging from paved two-lane ramps with full facilities to simple gravel slides into quiet inland lakes.

Most public launches in Michigan are free to use, though some state park and county-operated sites charge a day-use or launch fee. All DNR-managed sites are open to the public and don't require a membership — just a valid Michigan watercraft registration for motorized boats.
