Brown Trout Conservation Status
Introduced Brown Trout was introduced to Michigan and is now an established part of the fishery. Native to Europe. Introduced to Michigan in the late 1800s and now a popular stocked sport fish. Thrives in cold streams and deep lakes. Not considered invasive in managed fisheries. Michigan requires a minimum length of 15" to keep. The daily bag limit is 5.
Brown Trout Habitat & Behavior
Cold, clear streams and deep inland lakes. Holds in undercut banks, deep pools, and spring holes. Moves shallower at night. DNR records show Brown Trout present in 498 Michigan water bodies. Highest stocking activity on record is in Allegan, Montcalm and Crawford counties. Bite activity rates Good or better in Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Sep, Oct, Nov and Dec.
