🔬 Lepomis macrochirus x Lepomis cyanellus

A hybrid cross between a bluegill and a green sunfish. Body shape is intermediate between both parents, with blue backgrounds, chain-like patterns, dark green/brown foreground coloring, and yellow or orange undersides. Iridescent blue streaks appear below the eyes and on the jaw. Grows faster than either parent and is often sterile, making it popular for stocking ponds and small lakes.

Introduced Hybrid Sunfish was introduced to Michigan and is now an established part of the fishery. Hybrid of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus). Found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams where both parent species coexist. Tolerates a wide range of water conditions. DNR records show Hybrid Sunfish present in 111 Michigan water bodies. Highest stocking activity on record is in Marquette, Alpena and Wayne counties.
